USC’s Immerse Studio

Located in University of the Sunshine Coast’s new $33m Learning and Teaching Hub is the Engage Research Lab, which investigates and develops interactive technologies. It boasts a variety of hi-tech spaces designed for learning and collaboration, including an impressive Immerse Studio.

The ‘Immerse’ studio provides viewers with 270-degree in full high definition. It’s designed to create amazing teaching and learning opportunities and enable students, researchers, partners and the community to have new experiences of learning, research and engagement.

The audiovisual solution was designed by InDesign Technologies and includes six edge-blended Epson full HD projectors to create a massive 19m-wide image (10,548 x 1200 pixels). The content for the projectors is driven from a six-headed video card PC located in the adjacent control room. Audio for the Immerse space is delivered via a EV NetMax N8000 DSP, a 7.1 High-Definition surround sound processor and 1470W amplified power.

USC is excited with the end result and the opportunities the studio brings.  Associate Professor of Interactive Digital Media and Director of the Engage Research Lab Christian Jones talks about the potential saying,  “The studio can be used to simulate a busy nursing ward for our Nursing Science students, a war scene for our Journalism students to report on, or a car accident scene for our road safety researchers and paramedics. We are currently developing immersive experiences such as simulations of coastal flooding, visualisations of neurological pathways in the brain, installations of interactive digital art and animation, and innovative gaming mechanics for individual and shared exploration and learning.”
